Review: Fever Dream by Samantha Schweblin

August is nearly upon us, and it's one of my favourite months of the year. August is the home of one of my favourite month-long literary celebrations; 'Women In Translation' Month. You'll be hearing a lot more about that from me very soon. I know it's not quite August yet, but I was itching to read this book, and I thought it would be a perfect transition from one month into the next. 'Fever Dream' isn't my first book by a woman in translation of the year, but it's already one of the strongest.

Review: Sad Girls by Lang Leav

A horror story? Or a doomed romance? Lang Leav's 'Sad Girls' left me with more questions than it answered. "School is almost out for Audrey, but the panic attacks are just beginning. Because Audrey told a lie and now her classmate, Ana, is dead. Just as her world begins to spin out of control, Audrey meets the enigmatic Rad—the boy who could turn it all around. But will their ill-timed romance drive her closer to the edge?"

Review: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is a series of diary-style extracts, told from the perspective of an unnamed narrator. Set in the future, America has been transformed into a post-apocalyptic world where women are relegated to various official statuses, dependent on their worth to this new, dystopian society. Those deemed no longer useful are condemned to certain death in the now deadly wilderness. Our main character, newly renamed ‘Offred’, is a handmaid, used to combat an epidemic of infertility and help those in power continue to breed.

Waterstones Event: Samantha Ellis on Anne Brontë

Last week I had the pleasure of being able to listen to one of my favourite authors, Samantha Ellis, talk about her new book at my local Waterstones, in York. 'Take Courage: Anne Brontë and the Art of Life', examines the life and writing of the ‘other’ Brontë, to try and understand why she has been so misrepresented in literary history, and what we can learn from her own unique attitude to life. I had been looking forward to this event since I had booked my tickets back in April, and it was every bit as interesting as I imagined.

Review: How To Be a Heroine by Samantha Ellis

Part-memoir, part-essay, Samantha Ellis’s first book, ‘How to Be a Heroine’, is a heart-warming and charming exploration into how the women we read about guide, and change, the women we become. Exploring famous female literary characters; from Anne Shirley to Esther Greenwood, Ellis uses her analysis of these characters to examine her own life, and how they affected her growing up.

Review: Margaret The First by Danielle Dutton

'Margaret the First' is a snapshot of one of history’s most colourful characters. Referred to by her contemporaries as ‘Mad Madge’, Margaret Cavendish was of the first English “celebrities”, and a tireless pioneer. Dutton’s book examines what it meant to be an ambitious female aristocrat in the 17th Century world.
